HERE WE GO AGAIN. I'm not so happy with this one, but hey.
---
Deep in the heart of the GKND base, there is a room. A room full of comfy couches, and entertainment systems, and a doorway leading straight into one of the many kitchens. It was in this room, and others just like it, that many of the alien operatives spent most of their free time; relaxing after a mission, gaming with friends, it could all be done here.
These rooms were also popular locations for mass slumber parties.
“Aha! Gotcha!”
“Oh no you didn’t, take this!”
“Guys, keep it down! How am I supposed to win this game if you’re being so loud?!”
“You’re not exactly quiet yourself!”
“Silence is golden, duct tape is silveeer!”
Warm laughter and excited conversation had filled the room to the brim, causing it to leak out through the cracks around doors and into the adjacent rooms. This group of aliens had gathered on this night to celebrate their first day off in weeks. For a long time, it felt like every known enemy (and even some unknown ones) had decided to attack one after another, and they had finally gone for more than three days without an urgent mission or heated battle to deal with. So they were making the most of it.
“Oof!” The rainbow princess grunted as a feathery pillow came crashing down on her head. Quick to retaliate, she swung her pillow into the cat-girl’s torso, causing both of them to topple over, giggling.
On the other side of the room, it was Ice Queen vs Squirt and Fish Guy versus… The Other Squirt, in an intense video game battle. The concentration on their faces was incredible.
“You’re gonna die, you’re gonna die!” Dengeki jeered, but his incessant button mashing suggested he wasn’t entirely convinced of his victory yet.
“No I’m not, you are!” His opponent retorted, his fingertips glowing bright red against the dull grey of the controller, creating the impression of a warm glow as they became just a blur of rapid movement.
“Shut up, both of you,” Vibe almost snarled, not appreciating the disturbance of her concentration coming from the two boys.
“You’re just sore because I’m winning!” The little blue alien exclaimed excitedly, his antennae shining brightly and bobbing about on his head.
“Only because you’ve got four arms!”
“But I have smaller hands!”
In the kitchen, Cyril was having lots of fun raiding the fridge with Unagi.
“Are you sure mixing garlic ufonse and cream trelate is a good idea?” the sensible twin asked as he observed the yellow bird haphazardly throwing things together on a plate.
“Sure! I do it all the time!”
But back out in the main room, the door suddenly opened, revealing a certain grumpy alien to be stood outside.
“Can’t you morons keep it down?!” Ynda growled, glaring at every person individually. “Some of us are trying to sleep!”
“Oh, lighten up!” came a yell from Dengeki, who seemed to be losing the video game now. “We’re just having a bit of fun!”
“Well can’t you do it QUIETER?!”
When she received no further response, the tired one just sighed and left, vowing her revenge. On her way out though, she was passed by a certain levitating girl who didn’t notice the little green alien on the floor. Luckily Ynda hardly noticed her either, and was more interested in returning to her room and reading her book.
Cheers of triumph and yells of protest erupted as the winners were announced on the video game. Nebulos and Etoile were the champions, and Dengeki and Vibe were already plotting how to get them back.
The yellow skinned winner would have teased the losers if a thought hadn’t suddenly entered his mind.
“Hey have any of you guys seen Nalo?” he asked, glancing around the room. “She was meant to be-- oh there she is!” The girl in question had just entered, but Etoile couldn’t fail to notice straight away that something was up.
“Hey are you okay, Nalo?” came Nebulos’s voice, beating Etoile to the punch. The stare which Nalo gave him in response practically spoke the words “Do I LOOK okay?” In fact, as she moved swiftly across the room to retrieve a notebook and pen lying there, anyone who she passed would have stared at her when they noticed that she was actually making a distinct growling noise in the back of her throat.
No one said a word, because now she had grabbed the writing implements with a pair of metal limbs from her back, she was scribbling furiously on the paper. It only took her a few seconds to write enough to fill up the page, rip it out, and throw it in the general direction of the others before continuing on the next page. Etoile scrambled to pick up the paper, and Nebulos was quick to follow and climb onto his shoulder to read it. Several of the others came over too.
But when they looked at the paper, they found they had trouble reading it. Her usually perfect handwriting was tainted with imperfections, and many words were completely illegible. Two more pieces of paper had flown over and the girl was still going, floating with her normal arms folded tightly over her chest.
Upon reading the papers, they managed to figure out that Nalo was so annoyed because she hadn’t experienced the same day off as the others, and had been working solidly up until minutes before her arrival. The novel was describing her day, which seemed to steadily worsen and irritate her further. One remark she made halfway down the second page commented on how the depressing thing was that her position in her previous sector was janitor, and janitor work was what she had been doing all day.
As another piece of paper sailed over, the scratching of pen on paper suddenly faltered. The solid sound of scribbling out was heard, and then a moment more of writing. The final piece of paper, half of which was crossed out, simply said “sorry”, apologising for her ranting and anger.
“Oh, don’t worry!”
“Everyone has bad days!”
“You know what fixes bad days? Food!!”
The moody girl was beginning to loosen up, her eyes scanning the others carefully, not revealing anything now. But her friends weren’t going to stand for that.
“Come play video games!”
“Noo, pillow fight!”
“FOOD!!”
...
Several hours later, the group of alien juveniles had thoroughly exhausted themselves. They had all claimed the couches and most of them were asleep. Unagi and Vibe were taking up a whole couch together, the fish kid lying asleep on top of his ice maiden.
On another couch, Dengeki and Cyril were curled up together in a corner, and the two princesses plus Nebulos were dozing on the other side.
Yet on a third couch, Nalo and Etoile were still awake, barely. Lying side by side and facing one another, the sleepy boy could just see his friend’s golden irises peeking out from behind her heavy eyelids. His own eyelashes fluttering a little from fatigue, he hesitated and slowly slid his arm around her shoulders. He noted the tired smile she gave him in gratitude, not just of the gesture, but also of all the times tonight he had made sure the girl was thoroughly enjoying herself. He didn’t have time to return the smile before the girl’s eyes slid shut, and she pulled herself in, tighter and closer. The boy’s already considerably warm cheeks brightened and he mirrored the movement, holding her close as they drifted off to sleep.
