Just a little one. Nalo and Etoile.
---
Squeak squeak squeak squeak…
The incessant sound of a dry wipe marker on the smooth surface of a white board.
Squeak squeak squeak squeak…
Squeak squeak squeak squeak…
Click.
“Hey Nalo!”
Her eyes glanced away from the board to confirm it was the yellow-skinned alien she knew all too well who was entering the room.
“… What are you doing?”
Her slightly irritated expression didn’t change as she continued writing. Bewildered, Etoile tilted his head slightly and moved away from the doorway to travel across the room, coming to a stop beside his friend.
Then he noticed what she was writing.
“Woah…”
Almost every inch of the board was covered in complicated-looking mathematical equations. His bright blue eyes went wide with fascination, and they darted back and forth in his eye sockets as he tried to make sense of it.
Averting his eyes to look at Nalo instead, he noticed she was holding a calculator and a piece of paper in her metallic hand. Even balancing on his tip toes, Etoile couldn’t read the information on the paper, but could only assume they had some relation to the sums on the board. Glancing up at them again, he suddenly spotted some English words amongst the numbers.
‘Nebulos’ ‘Midpoint’ ‘Milo-Lee’ ‘Nebulae’ ‘Position of Gejera star’ ‘Niji’ “Distance from… planet of origin…?’
Etoile spoke the last one aloud, and made an educated guess. His friend was, for some reason, calculating the distance between their friends and their home planets. He looked up at his female friend, and questioned her motives for doing so. She just shrugged.
Nalo only wrote for a few more seconds before stopping, glancing at the boy beside her, who looked thoroughly confused. In a small space at the bottom of the board, she wrote “Distance between you and I: one foot.” Etoile was slow to notice this, but when he did, he laughed.
Without a second thought, he bounded forward and hugged the girl, before reaching out his hand to erase some of the letters off the board, leaving behind the message:
“Distance between you and I: 0”
