DETECTIVE NALO.
Haha, my next one-shot will feature someone else besides Nalo and Etoile, I promise. XD For now, enjoy these two!
--
“We haven’t had a mission in ages.”
The paper, scrawled on with perfect handwriting, was flipped around so that the yellow alien on the other side of the couch could read it. He was relaxed against the arm of the couch, lying back lazily, but he nodded when he read the words, his usual smile dropping into a small frown. “I know. It’s getting to a little dull.”
The paper was crumpled up and tossed aside with one metallic limb while two more were busy writing another message, which she showed to him when she was finished. “I’m getting a little anxious. I kind of want an adventure.”
“We’ll probably get one soon.” The alien shrugged, flashing a smile, and leaned back again, his antennae drooping behind his head. But his friend, her yellow eyes not missing anything, couldn’t notice the tiny grin that stayed present on his lips as he closed his eyes.
That grin meant trouble, and she knew it well. Whatever Etoile was planning, Nalo was certain that she was going to regret mentioning her boredom to him.
--
The base was unusually quiet, as though a deep sleep had settled on the inhabitants. But that wasn’t likely, Nalo knew, as it was the middle of the day and even the most calm aliens had trouble sleeping due to the ruckus that the others usually caused. So what the silence came from, she didn’t know.
After a little while of trying to find someone, she decided that they were probably outside playing. The kitchen, the game room, and the hallways were all empty, which all pointed to some sort of outside adventure that they had gone on. She felt a little put out that no one had told her about it, but then realized that this was the perfect opportunity to take a much-needed nap.
Her room was close by, and when she entered, she realized that the door had already been open slightly. Bristling, Nalo realized that someone had been in her room. But when her eyes fell on the contents that were lying loftily on her bed, she realized exactly who it was and her anger turned into confusion.
A hat, a pipe, and a coat were all sitting on her bed, folded nicely, along with a note. Nalo recognized the outfit as Etoile’s silly detective outfit, the one that he kept simply because it made him laugh to wear it. Amused, she picked up the note, already recognizing the yellow alien’s hasty scrawl that looked like chicken-scratch next to her own handwriting.
“Nalo,
Time for your adventure!
If you can solve the puzzle by the end of the day, then you win! We’re all waiting for you, so you’d better get started!
Here’s your first clue:
Talons and feathers are sure to be near,
and you’ll be finding your second clue here.
See you soon!
Love, Etoile”
A wry smile crossed the girl’s features, and she plopped the hat on her head. Trust Etoile to think up something silly like this. Once she had the coat properly draped on her frame, with the bubble pipe stowed safely in one of the pockets, she began her trek.
Talons and feathers obviously meant Cyril, so she when straight to his room. One of her limbs knocked on the door, and a loud voice inside yelped.
“Is that Nalo? HI NALO! You can come in but only if you have a good reason!”
With a shake of her head, she pushed inside to find him hopping about as though he was anxious about something. His wide eyes turned to face her and he burst into a long-winded rant. “So what’re you doing here? Because I obviously don’t have something for you, that’d be silly, what would I have for you? So it was good for you to visit me but-“
He stopped when her eyebrow lifted at him and then ducked his head, meekly. “Okay, so I lied! Here’s the clue, but don’t tell Etoile I gave it to you this easily, okay? Good luck!” And he hopped out as though he had never been there, leaving Nalo extremely confused.
Shrugging, she inspected her second clue.
“Mischief and chaos, you’re likely to find,
but only if you’re of a smart mind.”
So far, Etoile wasn’t putting up much of a challenge. Nalo set off to find the twins, wondering just how long Etoile’s little game was going to last.
She found their room and knocked, hearing the sound echo into the corners. All of a sudden there were people at both of her shoulders, startling her into dropping both of her clues.
“Smart girl,” Dengeki purred, grinning.
“But you’ll have to find your clue!” Unagi danced away, gesturing into the room that was cluttered with the twins’ possessions.
Dengeki cackled slightly, disappearing down the hall as he shouted. “Good luck!”
As much as she didn’t want to venture into the twins’ room, she knew that she had to, or she’d lose Etoile’s game.
Frowning, she edged inside and peered around the area, glad that they weren’t here as she hesitantly used a limb to push aside their belongings. Finally she found a piece of paper, sticking out of a book that looked as though it had only been opened on rare occasions.
“You’ll need him nearby if you’re ever in need
of a smile, a laugh, or a brightening deed.”
Nalo tilted her head and thought for a moment, and then scoffed silently. Etoile had obviously put “brightening” there on purpose, which led to one person.
Bang, bang, bang when her limb on Nebulos’ door. Noises inside seemed to indicate movement, and then Nebulos hopped into view as he pulled it open, smiling hugely.
“You’re doing good so far!” His antenna glinted brightly. “The next clue is verbal, so you’d better listen close!”
With all four hands tucked behind his back, Nebulos beamed and recited:
“Think of the sky after a dark, pouring rain,
and think of the smile that one person gains.”
With a little wave, the alien then grinned and said, “Good luck!” Then he hopped down the hall and out of sight.
Nalo pondered this for a moment, getting out the bubble pipe and blowing in it just for kicks. They were getting less obvious with each one. The clue to this one would be to think of the sky after rain, not during rain. What happened to the sky after it rained?
Oh, duh.
She found Princess Niji in all of her rainbow glory, sitting on her bed with her feet swinging. The girl brightened when she saw Nalo, and let out a happy laugh. “You did it! Etoile said you were smart, and I knew he was right! Here’s your clue!”
She handed Nalo a slip of paper and danced away, leaving Nalo with a paper that was larger than the others.
“You’ve done well so far, we have to admit,
but this one won’t quite be so easy.
You won’t be looking for any one person,
whether happy, depressing, or sleazy.
For this one you’ll find a particular place
that’s set there outside in the sun.
It’s a place of old memories, laughter, and light,
a place where we’ve always had fun.”
Without her being able to stop it, a smile tugged upward on Nalo’s lips, and she made her way outside. The sun was bright and shining above her, and she felt undeniably happy, letting the light spill onto her skin. She knew where Etoile would be found; underneath the sweet fruit tree, where they had spent many afternoons with fruits and laughter abound.
Just as she suspected, there he was, sitting on a checkered blanket. His eyes lit up when he saw her, and he leaped to his feet, throwing his hands into the air exuberantly. “You did it!”
Her laugh was silent but joyful, and she scribbled on a paper for him. “That was much too easy. But it was fun.”
Etoile grinned and patted the blanket beside him, inviting her to sit, and she did, feeling a warmth on the inside. Especially when he pulled out a huge picnic basket, placing it in front of her. “Time to celebrate!”
All of a sudden, heads started popping up all around, and people from all around came to sit nearby, chattering happily as they sat down beside her.
“We’ll have to do that again sometime!”
“That was too easy, though, it’ll have to be a lot more difficult.”
“Detective Nalo might rival Detective Etoile!”
“We should have more adventures like this!”
Meanwhile, Etoile beamed, and Nalo just shook her head. All of this just because she’d said that she was bored. One hand ruffled his hair affectionately as they broke into the basket to fish out the food.
Silly boy.
