"LET'S PLAY SOME FLITSZERBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALL!"
The shout rang across the field and sent close to a thousand operatives roaring with excitement as the players continued to get ready to enter the wide sweep of green grass. Everyone was excited for this game and for the story that was coming along behind it. Sector SUN and Sector STAR, long-time rivals for reasons unknown, were finally facing off in what looked to be the most interesting game of the season.
Downward, the two teams were getting ready in their set dugouts, both of them coursing with both anticipation and pride. Each team was ready to represent their sector, and the tension was running higher than usual, especially among a few certain members of the field.
Brightly dressed, Niji was clapping her hands together enthusiastically. "Come on, guys, are you ready? We're going to win!" Her outfit twirled with her as she danced through the small space, pumped up and ready to cheer on her team.
In another small area, Masurao and Tala were already arguing about whether the small girl should wear protective gear or not.
"I don't need it!"
"You do, too, now put it on."
"It's too big for me! I won't be able to levitate as well!"
"It doesn't matter."
After many long minutes of such an exchange, the girl huffed angrily and yanked the gear from his hands, stuffing it over her thin frame where it hung loosely and awkwardly. She made sure to send him an icy glare before storming off to find Etoile and help him get on his own gear.
On the bench, the twins looked as chilled as very, holding their bats aloft and looking smug. They had no doubt that they were going to smash the other sector, and they had no problems informing everyone of this fact. In their spare time, they sent intimidating smiles over to the other sector, just to shake them.
Walking down the field toward the dugout, Nalo and Etoile were already suited, and he was talking to her calmly about the game. He did this frequently before their matches, and Tala had explained to the curious that talking to Nalo helped him feel calm when he went into the game.
Unfortunately, their conversation was interrupted with a nasty voice. "Cute girlfriend, Etoile."
The sarcasm was meant to cut deep, but it didn't go quite as Mercedes had intended. Etoile looped an arm around Nalo's shoulders and sent a warm smile back at Mercedes. "Isn't she, though?"
And, with that, the pair kept moving forward, leaving Mercedes behind. Grimacing at them, she flounced back over to her sector's side of the field, her purple cheerleader's skirt short enough to bounce with each step as though she was well-aware of how great it made her legs look.
When she was out of earshot, Etoile whispered to Nalo, looking across the field, "We're beating their team today if our lives depend on it."
Up in the commentator's box, Nebulos and Cyril sat together, looking excited. "Alright, guys, I think we're just about ready to start the game! Sector SUN appears to be ready, and their players are in top form today, all of them eager to get the game started! Not to mention that they have the cutest team nurse that we've seen today!"
Lunira waved up and Nebulos, laughing delightedly, and a few minutes later Cyril suddenly announced, "Ooooohhhh, I know why you said that! Because she's your girlfriend, right? Am I right?! I'm right, aren't I?!"
There was a noise that sounded awfully close to muffling, and then Nebulos' voice rang out again. "And Sector STAR appears to be ready as well! Players, take to the field! Remember, powers may be used but we're keeping this a clean fight."
Etoile sat on the bench, watching as his little sister marched out onto the field. She was way more offensive than he was, so they usually put her out first. But he didn't mind that, because she ended up frightening a lot of people with her skill of intimidation, and afterwards, when he would take to the field, everyone would look a little warily at him as though they expected the same. It was fun.
Tala was followed by Masurao, who looked stern as usual. He knew how important this game was to them, but he acted the same, making his way toward the goal. He was their best guard, quick and nimble, and everyone had no doubts that he would do a good job.
The twins were bantering back and forth as they sauntered across the grass, loudly making remarks about the other team. Divad scoffed at their words, but he was getting more and more angry with everything that they said. Grinning madly, the twins took their places, holding their bats at the ready.
And then Vibe came out, deceiving in her appearance. Harmless-looking, smiling, the other teams usually tended to underestimate her. No one could predict the ferocity and and skill that she would unleash on the field, scoring point after point for Sector SUN while the others looked dumbfoundedly on.
The other team was equally as impressive, but Sector SUN wasn't intimidated. Divad stood at the front, smirking, and behind him stood a team of all males.
"Oi, guys, you got a sexist team or something?!" Tala shouted suddenly, crossing her arms and lifting her eyebrows at them. She wasn't much of a threat, not with her small form, but she would prove this fact wrong when she was actually allowed to play.
"Yeah!" Dengeki joined in the taunting with mocking eyes. "Or are your females just not as good as ours?"
Divad scoffed, and from the sidelines, Mercedes and her friends glowered. But there was no time for them to retort, because suddenly a shot filled the air.
"LET THE GAME BEGIN!" Nebulos called excitedly, and a loud cannon shot sounded as the ball was released onto the field.
The rules of Flitszerball were simple. Do everything and anything to get the ball into the goals on either side of the field. Powers were allowed as long as no harm came to any of the players.
The goals consisted of a tall pole that towered above the field. Along each side of the pole, there were various hoops of different sizes and heights for the players to get the ball through. It was a simple enough game, but with the variety of players, it could sometimes get very complicated.
The ball hovered in the air for a moment, and then dropped, a tiny sphere. Both Unagi and Divad lunged for it, but Divad got there faster when he suddenly exploded with fur, ripping into a large wolf and leaping off the ground to catch it between his teeth. And then he was off, racing down the field.
But Vibe was prepared for this, the queen of ice and all things slippery. Suddenly, half the field was covered in ice, and Divad stumbled and slipped, having been caught unexpectedly. Unagi flashed forward and ripped the ball from his mouth, throwing it to his brother, who sped off in the other direction.
Ten players dropped in front of Dengeki, who stumbled, confused. That many players weren't allowed on the field at the same time! But they were all copies of each other, made by a duplicating operative from Sector STAR, and he tossed the ball upward and shouted, "TALA!"
The girl whizzed forward through the air and caught the ball between her hands, flying over the wall of people and spiraling upward toward the goal. She was getting frustrated, however, as the wind rustled the large gear around her.
A startled gasp escaped her when a face appeared right in front of her, snatching the ball away and disappearing again. A teleporting operative! The sneak! She whirled around in midair and caught him materializing a half a field away and tried to speed after him, inhibited by the large clothes. A growl vaporized in her throat, frustrated.
But luckily, Masurao was there to handle it as the teleporting operative hurled the ball forward, in one of the higher hoops. Using the hoops to climb upward, he leaped and knocked it down toward Unagi, whipped his bat out and prepared to strike it across the field.
When the ball came in contact with his bat, it shrunk to the size of a small baseball, and the force sent the tiny object hurtling through the air. Vibe's hands caught it neatly and it morphed again into the previous size, that of a football. Using her icy nature, she created a path of frozen land before her and began to skate across it, picking up speed while she did so.
Divad leaped in front of her and morphed, becoming a large wolf once more, and he blocked her entire path so that she ran into him, loosing her grip of the ball. Neatly picking it up again between his teeth, Divad began running, and Tala sped after him with a determined look in her eye.
Suddenly, out of nowhere, she stopped and ripped off her gear with a furious fire burning in her expression. "SCREW THIS, MASURAO!" Her shout carried across the field to the startled guard. "I'M PLAYING TO WIN!" Throwing her gear down, she took off after Divad as before, but this time her speed had almost doubled, and she was right on his tail as he galloped across the grass, avoiding the icy patches.
The guard on the other side of the field rolled his eyes at Tala for her display, but after a few seconds shouted to her, "TAKE HIM FROM THE LEFT, TALA, THE LEFT!"
She folloed his orders and swooped to the side, and with a quick display of telekinesis, she yanked the ball from his mouth and turned to fly, but not before quickly making sure that Divad tripped and landed flat on his face. A smirk played across her lips as he skid forward, looking befuddled. Revenge was sweet. Hurriedly, she took off.
The teleporting operative appeared in front of her again, but this time, she was ready, and she dropped the ball directly above Dengeki's head. With one well-aimed swing of his bat, he set the tiny ball soaring straight through one of the hoops, past a startled looking goalie.
"SCOOOOOREEEEE!" Nebulos shouted, trying to hide his glee that his own sector had scored. "That first goal brings the score to 90-0 in favor of Sector SUN!"
The first half of the game continued in the same pattern, and both teams seemed evenly matched. Tala was taking every opportunity to bring Divad harm, and by the time the bell sounded that marked the end of the first half, she was close to being kicked out of the game.
Their team greeted them with enthusiasm in the dugout, and they discussed together who should go out the second half. The score stood at 360-270 in favor of Sector STAR, but they knew that they could make up the lost points in the second half with the right team.
"We can't send Tala," Etoile noted. "If she hurts Divad one more time, she's out, anyway." He didn't seem particularly displeased by this, though, as though was enjoying his sister's antics. In her seat, Tala just smirked.
"Let's leave Masurao in," Vibe suggested, sending a look at the bodyguard. "You're not tired, right?"
"No, not at all."
"I'll go in to replace Tala," Etoile said, grinning. He was eager to play the Sector that had been the cause of so much trouble. Beside him, Nalo lifted a limb and waved it slightly. She wanted in, too.
"I'll sit out," Vibe offered, and she took a seat beside Tala.
"So, Masurao, Etoile, Nalo, and us?" Dengeki smirked, looking pleased. "This should be fun."
The bell sounded again, and both teams made their way back out onto the field. Divad was still leading, and although sweat was beginning to show on his face, he looked ready to play. He sent Etoile a challenging stare, but the boy didn't even bother to return his gaze, simply striding across the grass and taking his position.
The cannon sounded and both teams leaped into action. Divad tries the same trick again of leaping into the air, but Etoile had seen him do this before and took a lot of pleasure in using his telekinesis to pluck the ball sideways and bring it down to him. With a salute to Divad, he took off flying through the air, coated in a thick red glow.
Suddenly, he ran into the something invisible, and a grunt of pain sounded in his lungs as he looked downward to see an operative that he only barely recognized, one skilled in making invisible walls. The ball had fallen from his fingers and that operative caught it, sprinting away in the other direction and throwing it to Divad.
Nalo's limbs whipped out and created a thick metal rope that the wolfoid tripped over, however, giving the ball to Dengeki, who smashed it across the field. Etoile, with a loud sound of effort, lifted Nalo up and threw her across the field after it, and the girl cased herself in a cage of metal limbs to shield the landing while one limb whipped out and caught the ball. When she had stabilized herself, she let more limbs explode out from her, winding toward the goal and tossing the ball through one of the hoops while the goalie stood unsuredly, trying to figure out what to make of the many silvery tendrils that he had been faced with.
The pair exchanged loud whoops of triumph and Divad scowled. Up in the commentator's stand, Cyril began squawking excitedly.
"IT'S TIED! IT'S TIED, NEBULOS, IT'S TIED!"
"I know, Cyril." With a light laughter, Nebulos tried to bring order back to their job. "This brings the score to 360-360 with only a few minutes left in the game. Someone's gotta score or we'll all leave today feeling very unsatisfied!"
The ball was fired out of the cannon again and began to drop. Etoile tried to fly upward to grab it, when a huge, clawed paw reached outward and slammed down into his body, shooting him into the ground.
"FOUL!"
Tala leaped to her feet, rage shooting across her expression. "THAT WAS A DIRTY MOVE, JERK!"
Vibe made the girl sit down once more, and Divad only smirked before picking the ball and bounding away. Dengeki chased after him while Unagi bent over Etoile. "Hey, Curly, you alright?"
The boy looked like he'd gotten the wind knocked out of him, and like he'd been caught in a stampede, but he waved a hand. "Go, go catch him!" Lifting weakly into the air, he grimaced. He could get Divad back for that and trip the wolfoid with a simple tug of telekinesis, but he didn't think it was right. Hurriedly, he sped after the creature.
Masurao just barely managed to block the shot, much to Sector STAR's disappointment. Etoile waved a hand at him, and the bodyguard seemed hesitant to give it to the boy who'd just been thrown into the ground, but Etoile nodded at him and Masurao shrugged. Winding his arm back, he threw it to Etoile, who caught it and sped away.
Divad leaped in front of him and morphed into his huge wolf form, bringing Etoile to a halt, where he hovered in a panic, looking for open people to throw it to.
Mockingly, Divad began to speak in a thick, deep, growling voice. "Come on, aren't you going to play? Your sister isn't out here to do the work for you."
Etoile refused to give into his game. Divad wasn't the cruelest, but he knew how to twist emotions to throw the game for himself, and he was trying to get into Etoile's head. But the clock was winding down and Etoile was beginning to panic. The operative who conjured walls was busy using them to slow down his friends, and Etoile had no hope of lobbing it weakly over Divad's head.
"Maybe," Divad continued, trying to get a reaction out of him, "you and your slu*ty girlf-"
BAM.
A yelp escaped David's muzzle as Etoile threw him aside, smashing the ball into their goal while his eyes took a furious red tint. The bell sounded, signaling their goal, and the clock ticked down it last seconds while another bell began to ring loudly.
"SECTOR SUN DID IT!" Nebulos shouted, caught up in the excitement while Cyril began madly shrieking unintelligible things next to him. "450-360, SECTOR SUN WINS!"
A cheer ripped across the field as Etoile gently touched down on the ground, and all of Sector SUN sprinted out onto the field to join in a large group cheer, hugging each other and screaming in triumph. Etoile found Tala and wrapped her in a tight hug, swinging her around delightedly while Sector STAR looked grumpily on from their dugout.
"Let's go celebrate!" Nebulos cried, appearing on the field from where he had made his way with Cyril down from the commentator's box. "There's pizza in the cafeteria!" And Sector SUN, still cheering loudly, began to run in that direction, screaming vibrantly with each other over their victory.
Etoile stayed behind with Nalo, who was looking at him with eyes of concern as if to make sure that he wasn't too badly injured. But he seemed fine, and so they both began to follow the crowd while Etoile congratulated her enthusiastically on her great goal.
His eyes fell on Mercedes and Divad, who were staring at them with venom in their eyes.
