Roz suggested the title. I think it's awesome.
I have no idea if this comes sooner or later in whatever kind of weird timeline that we have of the Etoile/Divad/Nalo/Mercedes situation, but I knew that this would happen eventually. Etoile would want to set things right.
Haha, I'm in such a writing mood today. SPAM YOU WITH WRITING, SPAAAAAAM. X3

She thought she had seen the last of him, but that was obviously a falsehood. It was no doubt him; she could tell by the vibrant red mop of curls that sat on top of his head. And surprisingly, he was making his way toward her, even though he had made it a practice in the past to avoid her and her group of friends. Holding her can of soda aloft in her fingers, she watched him approach with a blank expression.
"Mercedes."
She used to like the sound of her name on his tongue. He had such a sweet personality - it was like her name had become a beautiful thing. But now it was just a mockery of what had been. A joke.
"Etoile," she greeted coolly. Her friends began to poke each other and giggle at the boy that they spent so much time mocking. But he stood proudly, firmly, and kept his eyes only on her pair of pink lenses.
"May I speak to you in private, if that's alright?"
Now her friends laughed even harder, but Mercedes could see no harm in it. His violent little sister was nowhere in sight, and he appeared to be alone. Shrugging, she stood, and she followed him down a branching hallway and into an empty room where he turned around and faced her, waiting for the door to close.
"I'm not taking you back," the girl purred, inspecting the chipping nail polish on her long fingers. She had to assume that his intent was something along those lines with an expression as serious as that.
Despite his attempts to stay firm, his face flashed with amusement and he seemed to be struggling to keep from laughing. "I'm not here to ask you to take me back."
"Alright." The girl waved a hand at him. "What do you want?"
"I want the rumors to stop."
Ice began to grow inside of her. She hadn't intended for him to hear them. "I'm sure I don't know what you're talking about," she told him demurely with the innocent face that she was well-used to using.
"I'm not sure why you feel the need to spread rumors." He continued as if she hadn't spoken. "The ones about me weren't so bad, although I wasn't aware that I was such a terrible kisser." An auburn brow lifted at her, and Mercedes hid a grin.
"W-"
"But now you're talking about Nalo, too, and I won't tolerate that. I've heard whispers that she's pregnant, cheating on me, and a transgendered male. A male? Seriously, do you have nothing better to do in Sector STAR?" Etoile crossed his arms, lifting his chin at her while waiting for her to respond.
Well, look at that. He's standing up to me. I wasn't aware that he had such a backbone.
"What makes you think I started those?" Mercedes questioned, shrugging lightly.
Etoile snorted suddenly, and covered his mouth with his hand to hide his laughter. Mercedes glared, infuriated at him, as he tried to respond between chuckles. "Your friends aren't very good at keeping secrets, Mercedes. I asked who told them those things and they all pointed fingers at you."
Inwardly, Mercedes simmered. Her simpleton friends. . . of course they would do that to her. "What are you going to do about it?"
Etoile didn't respond right away. His hands tucked themselves into the pockets of his thick grey jacket and he just looked at her, his expression searching. Suddenly the question came, soft and wondering. "Why did you cheat on me?"
Mercedes tried to brush away his question with a shrug, but he wasn't having that. So she decided to slap him with the hard, honest truth. "My friends in my sector didn't approve of you. They thought I could do better. And they were right, weren't they?"
His eyes were sad as he continued gazing straight at her, like he was peeking into her very soul. "I could have given you everything that Divad can give you," he whispered.
"Ha!"
The exclamation came loudly, mockingly. Mercedes laughed with venom. "You can't turn into a huge wolf and carry me across the land for miles and miles, or protect me with huge claws!"
He wasn't looking at her anymore. He was looking out the wide window in the room, at the open sky. "Well, no. . ."
"See?"
His eyes snapped back to her, blue pools of sorrow. "But I could have helped you fly."
This statement stopped the girl short. For once, she had no response to give to him, no words to make him wish he hadn't spoken. She groped around for something cruel to say to him, something to wound him, too. "You were basically cheating on me, anyway. You and that girl, best friends, yeah right."
"Stop it." There he was again, commanding, assertive. Mercedes could no longer think him a weakling, not when he was standing up to her like this. He looked almost thoughtful. "In a way, I suppose you're right. Nalo and I have always been close, I suppose it was only a matter of time. . ."
Mercedes opened her mouth to say something, but he cut her off swiftly.
"But the whole time we were together, I was a devoted boyfriend. Nalo and I never did anything, Mercedes, not while I was with you. She was my friend, and that was all. And in that way, I never cheated on you." His eyes sparked slightly. "You can't say the same."
"Look, Etoile, I-"
"No."
He approached her, now, towering in his personality and fearsome in his might. Mercedes wasn't sure how she could have seen him for a weakling, because at that moment, his will was strong. "The truth, Mercedes. You owe me that much. You tell your friends the truth, and I will never speak to again. I will allow you to forget me, because I will forget you. Nalo, Tala, Masurao, the twins, all of us that were ever, at any point involved, will simply become members of another sector. But you have to tell everyone the truth."
"Why?" Mercedes sneered, unwilling to admit her lies. She didn't care that Etoile stood above her, or that he had the power to throw her aside like a toy. Her dignity was important. "Why does this matter so much to you?"
"I will not have her name tainted." She had never heard his voice so cold. "Or Tala's, or anyone else's. I'm ready to be free of you, and you will be free of me, but first the slate needs to be wiped clean."
She stared at him for several long seconds, considering his words. "And your demon little sister won't come after us anymore?"
"No." He was trying to keep calm at the insult to his sister. "I will make sure of it."
. . .
"Fine." She waved a hand to him and left, beckoning him to follow, and Etoile did. Down the hallway, into the cafeteria they went, and Mercedes' table looked up when she approached, followed by Etoile. She cleared her throat, but Etoile shook his head and pointed to the table.
Grimacing at him, she climbed on top of the table and swallowed. "Everyone?" Most of the room ignored her, and Etoile waved a hand, urging her to continue. "Hello? Hello? HEY!"
Now most eyes turned to her, and she cleared her throat. "Hey there. I have something to say."
She took the opportunity to glare at Etoile, who watched her calmly as she began to speak. "I have. . . a confession to make." Words she would rather bury than speak. "I. . . ch-. . . . I cheated on Etoile Ganmade."
Divad, sitting a few tables away, looked startled. Like the others, he had been fed the lie. She had told him that she was broken up with Etoile before she had kissed him. The boy's surprised gaze swept from Etoile and Mercedes and back again.
"He didn't cheat on me," Mercedes continued. "And his girlfriend, as far as I know, is faithful. I was the one who cheated on him, and I lied to everyone and said that it was him."
The truth. I owe him that much, she thought bitterly.
"He's not a terrible kisser, I suppose, but not the best either." Below her, on the ground, Etoile snorted amusedly. "He's . . ." She hated him at this moment. "He's a good guy. Strong, but he doesn't show it until he needs to. Loyal. A little cheesy sometimes."
The boy laughed at that, and waved a hand for her to continue.
"Nalo isn't pregnant or a man. Tala isn't secretly a diseased, guttersnipe child that Etoile tries to pass off as his sister." A lot of people had believed that one. Etoile still just laughed. "And Etoile. . ." Now she spoke through clenched teeth. "Etoile deserves my apologies. I lied about everything."
Wordlessly, she sat back down, staring at the boy with cold eyes that were filled with dislike. "Is that better?"
His expression had become blank again, but his voice was earnest when he breath a small, "Thank you." With a nod to both Mercedes and her friends, who were staring at Etoile with dumbfounded expressions, he turned.
And he walked out of the room with his chin held high.
And he never looked back.
