Fail at title, but I think it sorta fits...
Anyway, here's another story that I've been wanting to write but I kept putting it off due to school-work and--never mind. >> So, sit back, relax and enjoy this fluffy/suspenseful fic.
. . . would that be Fluffspense? ....*brick'd*
-------------------------------------------------------
Winds blew throughout the plains of a large planet, catching loose dirt and other sorts of debris within their grasp. They made their way past one of the few caves that were on the planet, some making a light "whhooooo"-ing noise from it's opening.
In the dark depths of the cave, there were only few bits of light shining from within. Most of them, coming from the rocks that were embedded into the walls. Others, hanged from the ceiling or were lieing casually on the ground. As many rocks there were, however, together they gave off a very dim, yellow glow. There was another light source, this one being brighter than all of the rocks placed side-by-side in the same spot. It gave off a pure white glow, and it was coming from a very small teen.
Nebulos sat in the midst of the light, him being the one causing the brightness, but his facial expressions didn't match his antennae--figuratively, of course. Instead, there lied a very pensive yet worried look on the Luminarian's features. Even though he was deep in thought, his ivory eyes kept glancing back towards the girl that was next to him.
She was asleep, lied down on her stomach with her head in her hands and looking somewhat the opposite from him. There was a calm exterior was on her face. Then again, usually when one's asleep, they always look calm. Lunira seemed perfectly fine, but that wasn't what was worrying the poor boy. What was worrying him was the fact that the lower half of her body was covered by rocks--which had all made themselves into a large wall. Other than that, the Ursaminorian girl seemed perfectly fine, but that didn't sway Nebulos' mind at ease.
He lowered his gaze at her paw, taking it into his hand and gently squeezing it. The day had started out so normal...so simple, yet how in the stars did they end up in a situation like this? Closing his eyes, Nebulos started to think, backtracking to where it all began.
Earlier that day, the two were called into Numbuh Infinity's office, the older teen had a mission for them. There was some sort of substance on this planet..Ukkianeo or something, he had forgotten the name of it, but it was really hard to pronounce. When they left the operative's room, and headed for the planet, the whole trip seemed like normal routine as well.
However, once they had arrived and began searching, Nebulos figured that was where things went wrong.
As on any other mission, they had to scan out the landscape, finding a good place to land and things like that. Same thing occured once they were outside walking around. However, Lunira had suggested that maybe what they needed to go look for was inside one of the caves that was on the planet.
It seemed like as any of a good place to start, but once they ventured inside, there was a slow sinking feeling that came upon him.
The cave was huge and dark, clearly not a good place to be searching around. Despite the small glowing rocks, without a good light source, finding a way in and out might've been a little hard. Lucky for them that Nebulos always had his antennae bright and ready.
Going inside the entrance was easy, but as they moved father and farther away from the opening, things went a little uneasy.
----------------------------------------------
"Wow...this cave is huge." Lunira whispered, as she kept turning her head every which way, glancing at the walls and ceiling. Nebulos nodded, his antennae bobbing as he did so.
"Yeah, but, at least it's not scary right? Well, at least, we've been in scarier situations before." Nebulos agreed, adding the latter a little quickly.
The panda-like girl nodded, before resting her green eyes on him. "But at least I'm with you." As she gave him one of her smiles, he couldn't help but give a grin to her in return.
Then, things had gotten quiet as the two were walking. It might've been because the two were in awe of the cave's light, or what they might find, but whatever the case may have be, it wasn't before long that Lunira had spoken again.
She glanced over towards Nebulos, him having his eyes closed with one pair of his arms behind the back of his head, and the other two in his pockets. By the look of the smile on his face, the Ursaminorian could only guess that he was thinking about a really good memory.
"Hey Nebby?"
"Hmm?"
"What'cha thinking about?" The blue boy had stopped once hearing the question, making the girl stop as well. A faint violet color began to grow on his cheeks. He didn't know she was watching him, though one could only keep looking around at the cave's features for so long.
First, he looked towards the ground, trying to think of what he was going to say. For one thing, the memory that was inside his mind was something that he'd kept with him since the day it happened, though it was also an unexpected event.
"Well, I was just thinking about..Remember when Numbuh 1 was telling us about Christmas?" Lunira gazed up at the ceiling briefly, before nodding.
"Mmhmm, I remember that. And how we were all trying to decorate the base with all sorts of weird things?"
"Yeah." Nebulos lowered his hands, glad that the girl had remembered. But, there was one part of the memory that he was very unsure of...However, just as he was about to ask another question regarding the Christmas-time memory, Lunira had beaten him to it.
"You know what else I remember? Numbuh 362 showing us what a Mistletoe was." Her grin had then softened into a shy one, as she placed her paws behind her back and was looking away. Though her face was towards the other side of the cave, Nebulos could see the small pink blush growing on her cheeks.
"Heh...I was about to ask you the same thing." He grinned even wider, happy that she was smiling. There were no words spoken between them, but they somehow knew what the other was thinking.
Just then, Lunira's smile faded once again, turning into a frown. She took a couple steps foreward, frown increasing as she did so.
Nebulos tilted his head to the side, noticing the sudden change of expression. "Luni?..."
"Shh." She whispered, holding a finger to her lips as she closed her eyes. A skeptical look made its way on Nebulos' face, wondering what it was. He glanced at her ears, noticing that they were twitching a little.
"What is it?" He asked, lowering his voice into a light whisper.
Lunira opened her eyes and shook her head. "Hmm...I thought I heard something, but it..stopped. Maybe it was some sort of landslide or something--"
CCCCCCCCCCCRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKK!!!!
"That doesn't sound good," Nebulos muttered, looking around to see where the sound came from. On the ground, he noticed that there was a large hole, which had started to close up on itself within minutes. His eyes widened, not having seen anything like that before. "Did you see that Lunira?...Lunira?"
Lunira wasn't paying attention to the ground, in fact, her focus was more directed towards what was up on the ceiling. He followed her line of vision, pale orbs resting on what looked to be some sort of large creature that had a snake-like body with talons on it's tail and upper front. It's head resembled that of a large lion, or some sort of large cat animal, and it looked pretty hungry.
"I think...we should run," Lunira squeaked. Grabbing his hand, Lunira started off deeper into the cave, hoping that maybe the monster's sight was weak, that maybe he only needed to use some other sort of technique to get around.
However, when there was a loud thud behind them, followed by a whirring-and-somewhat-hissing sound, it was clear the monster could see.
Being that they were very small, they had agility and speed on their side, but the monster made up for that with it's long body and reach. It wasn't before long that the creature was soon near their heads, ready for it's dinner.
There hadn't been any good hiding places, as the walls were pretty smooth and the floor seemed a little too hard to for them to make a hole. They could make one, but it might've taken awhile, and there really wasn't enough time at the moment.
As they were running, Lunira had gotten an idea. "Hey Neb?"
"Yeah, Luni," he panted, trying to keep the same pace, hoping the large animal would get tired soon.
"I've got an idea..." She looked over her shoulder, seeing that the snake-lion-bird creature had tripped over something, but was regaining its footing. That seemed like a good time as any to stop. Turning fully around, Lunira looked towards Nebulos, who was giving her a questioning look back.
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah. I'm older now, so I should be fine....But, just in case." She nodded towards the pockets on his pants, which Nebulos responded by pulling out a gun.
He stared at the Quablit-shooter, doubt clearly written on his face. Looking up, he asked, "GKND squirts promise?"
Lunira smiled at him, nodding.."Yeah..GKND squirts promise."
". . .all right...Look out, here he comes!"
Luckilly for her, she managed to turn forward again, just barely seeing the monster slither its way up to them. Within the seconds it took for it to arrive right in front of their faces, Lunira had grown into her super-height. In comparison, she was just barely the snake-creature's height, but it was close enough for her.
"Back off!" She told it, bracing herself, ready for whatever the creature was going to do.
Nebulos couldn't help but stare. Even though he had witnessed her ability plenty of times before, it was still amazing as to how such a small girl could grow that quickly. Despite the threatening height, the monster didn't look very pleased to see its meal grow, wanting to take him on.
However, a challenge was a challenge, so as the Monster began to ram against Lunira, Nebulos scampered around the body, trying to see any weak-points. He shot the various pieces of candy at random spots on the monster's back, but nothing had happened. In fact, by the sounds coming from the large creature, it seemed more agitated than weakened.
"Did you find anything?" Lunira yelled, trying to keep the lion-snout closed as it's head started to thrash about in her arms.
"I don't think it's working...Got a plan B?"
"Um..." The very tall girl looked around as she was trying to keep its mouth from snapping at her. "I think...hey! Can you try hitting the walls? Maybe that'll do something."
Nebulos stopped and glanced towards the wall. "It's worth a shot." Jumping off of the back, he ran over to the wall, shooting more pieces of blue, green, and purple colored balls at it. Despite their small size, they did do some damage to the wall, creating cracks within it and shaking the ceiling in turn as well.
A few rocks began to fall from the ceiling, only hitting the monster's head very lightly. Lunira figured that maybe a stronger force may help with creating a bigger rockslide. So, as Nebulos was still creating small rocks to fall down, Lunira took the monster's head, trying to make it ram into the other wall on the other side of the cave.
Again, fate was on their side as the impact created larger rocks to rain down on them, first starting from one side to the other, sealing the monster in it's own tomb. It had only taken a few minutes, but the creature was gone and most likely dead and buried within the large pile of rocks.
Not only the monster was completely covered, but it looked to be that the way out of the cave was sealed off as well. Somehow in the midst of it all, Nebulos came out of the rock-avalanche completely unharmed.
The first thing he noticed as he brushed the dirt awat was the way out being completely blocked. "Hmm...looks like we're going to have to keep moving, Luni." Then, he remembered she hadn't changed back yet.
He looked around, hoping for a sign of her anywhere, but his fears were only confirmed as he kept yelling her name. "Lunira?! Luni!!"
".......Neb?"
It was then that he did get a response, but it sounded faint. Near the other side of the cave, Lunira was face-down on the ground, back to normal height. He quickly rushed over to her, but as he came closer, he could've sworn his heart had stopped beating....she was stuck, half of her body was under the rock-slide.
"LUNIRA!!"
The girl in question rose her head, seeing a frantic Nebulos running at her. Lifting herself up, she glanced at the wall behind her, and then seeing the small crevice in between a few of them, where the lower half of her body had disappeared under.
When she turned her head back to Nebulos, seeing him already kneeling, his eyes full of worry, she gave a small smile.
"I'm fine...just stuck, but I'm fine." She tried to reassure him, though her eyes looked very tired. Nebulos's worried expression hadn't faltered one bit, his eyes kept glancing from her fact to the the crack and back, hoping that there wasn't too much damage.
"Luni...."
"I'll be fine...GKND Squirt's Promise, remember?" Giving another weak smile, she tried pushing herself up. "Um...can you help me out of here?" Nebulos nodded slowly, still a little unsure if he should try to move her. She might get even more stuck, but, then again, not doing anything wasn't going to get her out of there either.
Taking her two hands into his own, he tried pulling backward. His eyes squinted as he kept tugging, using all of his might to get his dear friend out of the crevice...
"Is it working?"
"Uh...not really."
...only to realize that she hadn't budged an inch. The blue teen sighed as he kneeled back down again, eyes almost level with her own. Lunira knew he had tried his hardest, but the rocks were too heavy, and she was really stuck in there.
"Well...I think I grew a couple of inches," she smiled at him, trying to get him to smile as well. A soft chuckle escaped his lips, but his worried frown had still remained.
"Don't worry, I'll call for help. J-Just hang on." Nebulos got to his feet once more, checking his pockets to see if he had remembered to bring the communicators. When there was no familiar lump that was in the shape of the electrical devices, he began to look around on the cave's floor.
"Oh no." There, lieing directly under a rather large boulder, was his communicator, which had probably fell out during their battle. He would've asked for Lunira's but her pocket was currently being covered up, so that was unaccessible as well.
Going back to the panda-like alien, he sat down next to her, giving a reassuring smile. "Don't worry...we'll, we'll find a way out. Can you grow again?"
By now, Lunira had her arms crossed with her head lieing on top. She looked up at him and bit her lip. "I don't think so...that fight sort of wore me out..." She turned her head, looking towards the ground, her eyes growing a little droopy.
"Hey, Neb?"
"Yes?"
"Do you mind if I just rest for a little while?" Nebulos' eyes watched her, and after what seemed like a long time, he nodded.
"All right....and while you're sleeping, I'll watch over you."
----------------------------------------------------------
And there they were, stuck within the depths of an unknow cave with no means of contacting the others back at the base. He knew that if Lunira woke up again, there might've been a good chance she would be able to move the rocks. However, those chances were very slim. Who knew how long the two of them would be in here, but, it might've been worse.
He had to keep positive, for Lunira's sake and well..for his own, as well. Some pretty negative thoughts had crossed his mind since he first saw the girl underneath the rocks, but the majority had left when it was clear she wasn't badly-injured. That was the last thing he wanted.
Opening his eyes, Nebulos stretched a little, wondering if he could probably try to find a way out. When he had gotten up, however, he never had the chance to.
"KYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYyyyyyyyyyyaaaaaaaarrrraaaaaaaghhhhhhH!!"
It looked like as thought the creature from before had a friend...and it wasn't happy either. His eyes widened, hoping that the monster wouldn't come around the bend and find them there, that maybe it was heading in the other direction or somewhere far, far away. Sadly, that wasn't the case as he could see the far-small-looking head of a lion peeking around the corner, it's bright red and orange eyes setting on him.
Instinctively, he stood out in front of Lunira, who was still asleep. It probably wasn't a good move, seeing as how the approaching creature would definately be way taller than him, and all he had to defend themselves with was a Quablit-shooter.
Key word, being was.
When he had picked up the weapon, the Luminarian's eyes showed clear horror as the shooter was good and empty. Not a Quablit left inside. "Oh man..." He looked back up, the creature now gaining speed and coming even more closer than before. Without a weapon, he wouldn't be able to fend off the monster, let alone try and distract it from going somewhere else. It looked like as if it would be the end for the two of them....
It might've, if Nebulos hadn't made a very quick descision.
Turning onto his heels, he crouched down and took Lunira's hands into his. Even though he knew she probably wouldn't had heard him, he spoke very softly.
"Hold on." Just as the lion-bird-snake...thing, was just about to ram it's head into the pair, tiny beams of light surrounded the two of them, before rendering them completely gone and without a trace.
Reappearing outside, Nebulos stumbled back onto his bottom, closing his eyes as he felt a little drained out. With one eye opened, he glanced around at their surroundings, noting that maybe his guess as to where the ship was parked was a little off. "Well..at least we're outside, and they're inside."
Lunira stirred a little, now just waking up. Rubbing her eyes with one of her paws, she yawned. "Wha--how?" Standing up, the girl looked a little bewildered, but seeing the cave was far off and gone, a smile had replaced it.
She turned towards Nebulos, who was trying to stand up despite the tired look in his eyes. "How did we get out? I mean, it's not like I'm ungrateful or anything, but..."
Now seeing the fatigued look in his eyes, Lunira stepped closer, worryment was now on her features. "Nebulos?"
Nebulos only smiled back at her, not saying anything...until he collapsed into her arms.
--------------------------------------------
It had been awhile since then...but when he had woken up, it seemed like only a few seconds had gone by. He found himself inside the medical ward, in one of the rooms they had for their operatives that had taken a serious enery-drainage. Looking over onto the table, he noticed a few things: flowers, some cards...and a bowl of Quablits. Then, his eyes rested onto a bearish-girl who had her head resting on the bed.
A bright smile came onto his lips, as he reached out and tapped her shoulder.
Lunira responded with something he couldn't make out, probably in her own language, but she opened her eyes and stretched. "Morning!"
"Morning...how are you?" the blue teen asked, as she sat up straight into her seat.
"I'm fine..but what about you? You scared me back there," she responded, which soon made his eyes grow wide as dinner-plates.
"Wait...back there?" Memories of what had happened all came flooding back, at least...up until a certain point. "Did we make it out okay? Are you hurt? Did the others come? What--" Lunira quickly placed a paw onto his mouth, stopping him before a million and one questions came out.
Giggling, she nodded. "Yes...No, and Well, the ship was already there, but I did alert them."
"Oh...well, that's good." Nebulos sighed with relief as he sat back into his bed. Looking over, he noticed that Lunira's smile had faded into a more solemn one.
"What's wrong?" Lunira looked up, seeing that he had noticed her being awfully quiet all of the sudden. She blinked at him a couple of times before looking down into her paws.
"Well..it's just...I was worried."
"About what?"
"About you!" She exclaimed, now looking at him straight in the eyes, kelly green orbs meeting snow white ones. "You seemed fine when I woke up, but then you just collasped into my arms like that, not waking up at all. I was really scared." Tears began forming into her eyes as she went on. "I tried waking you up, but you weren't responding, and when the Medic Squad arrived, telling me that your energy levels were really low, I was panicing. I didn't know what to do, and...and..." Finally, the water works appeared as Lunira found herself unable to finish.
Instinctively, Nebulos held out all four of his arms, which she gladly responded to by burying her face into his chest as he wrapped his arms around her. Her sobs were muffled into his shirt and the bed sheets.
"I didn't mean to scare you," he whispered, running a hand through her hair. "I just...wanted to protect you."
Along with the muffled sobs, came a few words, though they were more easy to make out, sounding a lot like the words: "From what?" Taking a deep breath, Nebulos recounted the story to her, from the moment when she fell asleep to the part where she'd woken up from their ordeal.
By then her crying had stopped, as she slowly lifted her head and looked into his ivory windows. Nothing came from her lips as she stared, though there were a lot of things she wanted to respond to him with. He could've died, they both could've if it weren't for him. Exactly how does one respond to that?
Finally, though, she had found an answer. Instead of speaking, she moved her head close to his and gently brushed her lips against his own into a kiss. She could feel him stiffen up a little, obviously taken by surprise by the action, but after a moment, he relaxed. The last time she had caught him off guard like this was when they were on their first date, and even then, he was surprised by the bold move.
Even though they had grown even more closer since then, Nebulos' violet cheeks returned just to taunt him. He didn't care, though, instead he closed his eyes and added a little more pressure into the kiss. The two of them stayed like this for quite awhile, maybe even longer if the nurse hadn't appeared and knocked on the door.
"Excuse me?" Instantly, the two teens broke apart, sitting up straight with their own respective blushes darkening their cheeks. As both of their eyes turned to the medical-alien, they could see that she was feeling a little awkard as well, interrupting their moment.
". . .er..Oops, I think I have the..wrong room." The alien then excused herself and quickly made her way out the door, leaving the two smaller operatives only blink that the now open space. Silence filled the room, until laughed slowly came from them, filling the void.
Being the first one to answer, Lunira looked back down into her lap, rubbing her paws together. "Sorry about that..."
"No, don't be." She looked up, seeing a still violet-Nebulos grinning at her, his eyes lighting up as much as the bolts on his antennae. "It was kinda nice."
"Yeah, it was, wasn't it." She smiled, leaning forward to place her forhead onto his. "You're my Hatvortave, Nebulos."
Nebulos only grinned back, looking into her eyes. "You're my hat-for-dave, too, Lunira." She giggled, knowing he was probably kidding about messing with the word...either that, or he was still trying to sound close to it. He was about to lean forward to kiss her again, but she stopped him, placing a finger on his lips.
"Um...Neb. I think you might need new sheets first." She pointed at the soaked bedding, still not dry from her tears from before. Nebulos glanced at this and nodded.
"Yeah..I guess I do." And then the two of them began laughing again.
