A little Aaron/Soare ficlet, because the idea made me smile. I wanted this to be a surprise for Roz and Yuki, so I didn't run it by them, so hopefully I got all the characterization correct. X3

“I think they have oatmeal today.”
“Stop pushing!”
“-and then I was like ‘Nu-uh!’ and she was like-“
“I feel like I’ve been hit by a spaceship today, ugh.”
The various chatter was scattered about the room, filling the distance corners and bubbling amongst the sleeping aliens. It would have seemed like a normal morning, given the sunshine that was pouring into the wide windows and the smell of seasoned foods that were being cooked in the back rooms of the cafeteria. But no. In one of the corners of the room, despair was brimming in the body of a distraught teenage girl.
Her sister, upon entering the room with two girls on her wings, immediately noticed the girl’s state. “Soare?”
When her name was called, a look of relief spilled across the girl’s expression, and she bounded over to her sister while wringing her hands with the utmost horror. Her babbling was too rushed for Koyu to understand, and so Koyu only attempted to listen for a few seconds before putting a hand over Soare’s mouth.
“I’m going to remove my hand, and then you’re going to tell me, very calmly, what’s going on. Agreed?”
Eyes wide and fraught with terror, Soare nodded slowly and Koyu dropped her hand to give the girl the freedom to speak.
For a few seconds, Soare said absolutely nothing, casting nervous glances from side to side to look from Erin to Arran, who were pretending with the utmost innocence that they weren’t listening. “I, uhm.” Her voice was even more whispery than usual. “I did something. . . bad.”
Upon hearing this, Koyu’s eyes rolled to the side. “How many times do I have to tell you? Accidentally running into someone in the hall doesn’t make you a bad person!”
“No!” Twisting her hands together, the girl’s metallic eyes widened a fraction and she shook her head. “It was really bad, but I didn’t mean to, it was an accident, Koyu, I promise!”
Putting an exasperated arm around Soare’s shoulders, Koyu lifted to eyebrows and drew her a little ways away from Erin and Arran. “Alright, alright, I’m listening. Tell me what happened.”
The words came rushing out like Koyu had unblocked a dam. “I was just eating breakfast, Koyu, and then I saw, uhm, well, I don’t know her name, and she was. . .”
“Go on,” Koyu urged when she saw the girl falter, fingertips tapping together nervously.
“S-she was . . . uhm . . . following.”
“Following?”
“Following. . . him.”
“Soare.” The girl clucked a tongue impatiently, and Soare winced a little.
“She was following Aaron and she was pretty and I was eating with Nellie and Angelle and Blaidd and them and watching them and I’m don’t usually watch them, I promise, but I was just watching and then . . .”
A tiny grin, almost invisible, was already tugging on Koyu’s lips. “And then?”
Instead of answering, Soare glanced over her shoulder, just enough for Koyu to follow her gaze to a tiny group of people that were gathered at the other end of the cafeteria. Most of them were trying to console the teenage girl that was trying in vain to pull oatmeal out of her hair while shrieking for someone to get her a towel.
It only took Koyu two seconds to work it out.
“You tripped her?!”
“No!” Panicking even worse than before, Soare’s hands were practically twisting themselves together. “No, I mean, it was an accident, I didn’t- I’m sorry, I’m horrid, I can’t believe I did it, but I couldn’t help it, my telekinesis just did, and I-“
“Arran, Erin!” Koyu shouted gleefully, running over to them suddenly. “You won’t believe what Soare did!”
“No!” The girl ran after her sister, trying to pull her back, but she had already spilled the story in a single breath.
“She didn’t!”
“I always knew she had it in her!”
“Soare, did you really?!” The two girls were suddenly on either side of her, with grins that danced in the bright cafeteria lights.
“That’s awesome!” Blaidd was smirking from his seat across the table.
The girl sunk into her seat, ducking her head in shame. While the others around her enthused about her unwilling act, she hunched over, poking a spoon at her oatmeal and thinking that it would be lovely if she had the power to sink into floors instead of her stupid telekinesis that was the cause of so much trouble.
“Can I sit here?”
The low voice just barely registered in her ears, and Soare glanced up to see Aaron with a tray, one hand in his pocket while he stood lazily beside her. Nodding hastily, she tried to keep herself looking at her food, although she could see him sit beside her out of her peripheral vision. “Good morning,” she finally blurted out, hugging her knees to her torso while chancing a smile in his direction.
A smile that he returned, even if it was a tiny one. “Morning.”
Happily returning to her oatmeal, Soare couldn’t stop a stray thought from flitting through the back of her mind.
Maybe. . . just once wasn’t so bad.
