Summary: When Renee becomes sick over the weekend, Niji takes it upon herself to nurse her back to health, but when her attempts to help backfire, she learns that helping a friend sometimes means letting them take care of themselves.
“Renee, it’s time to get up.”
A young alien Princess gently shook her partner for the fifth time that morning. The girl under the blanket responded with a muffled groan as she pulled herself from under the covers, she looked at her friend with a groggy expression.
“Good morning.” Niji piped. “Did you sleep well?” Renee shook her head as she slowly got up off her bed and made her way to the vanity across the room; she sat down and proceeded to brush her tangled hair. Niji held up a pink shirt and a blue skirt with pink trimming at the bottom from one of the dresser drawers. “Hmm, I think this skirt would look great with...” She trailed off; she took a closer look at Renee. Her eyes were droopy and she had dark circles under them as if she hadn’t slept at all last night, her cheeks were flushed, and her breathing was short and raspy. Just when Niji opened her mouth to speak Renee broke out into a rough coughing fit; her coughs shook her entire body. Horrified, Niji dropped the clothes and rushed over, but Renee stopped her efforts by holding out the palm of her hand. Niji stopped in her tracks, worry clearly written all over her face as the gem in the center of her forehead slowly changed from light blue to indigo .She watched as Renee tried to catch her breath,
“I-I’m… O-okay. It was just a little cough, that’s all.” She fibbed, her voice scratchy and trembling in the aftermath. She knew that wasn’t a little cough, it certainly didn’t feel like a little cough. And Niji agreed,
“Little cough?” She echoed, as she cautiously walked over to her “That was anything but little. It was awful!” She came to a stop in front of her and rested her hand on Renee’s forehead for a moment. “Hmm…You feel really warm, and…sweaty.” Niji said, “Are you sure your alright? You’ve been acting…funny all weekend.” Renee shook her head and sighed,
“W-well, I didn’t want to tell you this because I didn’t want you to worry, but…” She paused for a moment, wondering how she should phrase this in a way her Alien partner would understand. “Um, I sort of, have… a cold.” She said. Niji looked at her and tilted her head to the side,
“What do you mean? It’s always warm in your room, how can you possibly be cold?”
Renee sighed as she slowly dragged her feet to the bookshelf across the room and retrieved a large textbook, she placed herself and the book on the floor and began flipping through pages, and Niji floated over and looked over Renee’s shoulder curiously. Renee stopped at the page and pointed,
“Here, look, see.” Renee started to read the bold text out loud, “The Common Cold. Symptoms include: high fever, slight dizziness, headaches, nausea and vomiting, aches and pains, fatigue and weakness, sore throat, stuffy nose, sneezing, chest discomfort and coughing.” Renee closed the book and put it back on the shelf, as she walked back to her chair a wave of dizziness overcome her and slumped on her knees to the floor.
“I feel dizzy, and I ache all over.” She shook her head in attempt to clear away the wooziness, and whimpered in pain. Niji rushed to her side,
“M-maybe you shouldn’t be moving around so much.” She said helping Renee of the floor and gently sitting her on the bed.
Renee nodded drowsily, “Mm-hmm.” She reached over for a teddy bear for comfort. “This means I can’t go to school, and I’ll miss TK beat Davis in basketball in Gym today.” She groaned miserably and flopped face first onto her pillow. Niji sat on the edge of the bed, “Being sick sucks like a black hole doesn’t it?”
Renee nodded, coughing as she did so. “Yeah,” she paused to sneeze, “I-It really, really does.” She sniffled and curled into a ball feeling like she had to throw up. Niji gave her a sympathizing look before grinning ear to ear,
“I know what will make you feel better…” She said, a secretive tone in her voice. Renee raised her head slightly to look at her; she had a mixture of curiosity and wariness on her face.
“What?”
“…A visit from Willis!” Niji replied, knowing the reaction her Partner would have at the mention of said boy’s name. It secretly amused and concerned her when she would get blushy and awkward around him. “I just know he can turn that frown upside down.” She teased with a small giggle. As expected, Renee’s already flushed cheeks turned about 10 shades redder. Self consciously, she whimpered in embarrassment and buried her face beneath her pillow.
“Okay, first of all Niji, Willis and Terriermon live in New York City. That’s far, far away from here.” She said sitting up. “And secondly, colds are also very contagious, if he or anyone comes near me, it’s highly possible that they’ll catch my cold too.”
“And we definitely do not want that.” Niji, sighed.
“That’s why it’s better for now that no one knows I’m sick.” Renee whispered, hugging the teddy bear in her lap tighter. There was a brief moment of silence before Niji suddenly sprang to her feet.
“Well, somebody has to nurse you back to health.” She piped. “And I’m just the Princess to do it!” She added with the utmost confidence. Renee’s eyes widened as she looked at her colorful friend.
“Uhhh, Y-you know…Um…I-I don’t think that’s such a good idea Niji.” She hedged apprehensively. Niji merely waved her off and rolled her eyes.
“Aw, don’t worry so much. How hard can taking care of a human girl possibly be?” She asked with a nonchalant shrug. Renee sneezed, and blew her nose into a tissue. She leaned back into her pillow, with a sigh.
“Okay, Niji, I trust you. I know you’ll take very good care of me…” She smiled weakly, before closing her eyes and relaxing a bit. Niji smiled, encouraged by Renee’s trusting words and smile.
“I think this is going to be a fun and interesting day, don’t you think?” Renee giggled, and said with a sleepy smile,
“Yes, I do Niji.” She bobbed her head drowsily and yawned, “Yes, I do…”
Little did either girl know that sometimes helping a sick friend is easier said than done.
