Why Can't I?

Chapter 1- TGIF! (Thank God It's Friday!
It was that time again. Everyday, checking and pinning deep into her skin only to take time to see if her blood was healthy or not. The blonde teenager rose from her bed, getting ready for school.
Rachel McKenzie was 16, diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. She was lowering her blood-sugar by the needle of insulin.
She had been diagnosed ever since she had left the Galactic Kids Next Door with Nigel Uno—the boy of her truest dreams.
They’ve been best friends ever since, and secret childhood sweethearts. Yet they’ve never told a soul to each other about it. But one day, Rachel was going to confess… but when she was told she had diabetes—she didn’t tell anyone. The only two people in the universe who knew were her father, Ryan McKenzie, and her best GKND friend Kyra.
She looked her in mirror, seeing her reflection. Rachel wore an old red sweater, which had belonged to Nigel. But she wanted to return it as soon as possible. She also wore an under purple tank with aqua-jeans and black sneakers.
Her hair was really growing out, too. Her blonde waves were glowing in the sunlight almost. Rachel sighed, closing her eyes and hugged herself. She thought of Nigel, of Kyra, Kuki, Wally, and all her other friends up in the universe.
“…I wonder what Zinc would think.” Rachel said out-loud to herself. “And Nebulos? Lunira? … (sighs happily)” She thought it over, and her mind was telling her that they would always think positively of it—they wouldn’t ever think differently of her. Rachel smiled, giggling to herself.
“I even bet Inky would…run away from me… oh my.”
Her grin faded away, ending up into a frown. But she kept telling her not to worry—she had her whole life out to plan. And of course her eating habits, exercising, exc.
The doorbell rang, and Rachel grabbed her schoolbag, sprinting down the stairs immediately. “I’ll see you, Daddy!” She called to her father, passing throughout the kitchen.
Ryan shot his head out of the fridge, biting into an apple and his other hand was filled with a glass of milk. He was wearing a nice outfit and hanging red and orange stripped tie to go with it.
Rachel’s father worked with Cambias Industries, a company that built casinos all around for big bucks. Ryan was a hard worker, and worked late at night at times if his boss Zack Slater asked him to.
“Rachel!” Ryan cried out; his peeking his head out of the doorway and towards his daughter who was on her way to the front door.
“Yes?” Rachel asked, smiling at him kindly.
“Did you take your insulin?” Ryan asked with a smile. His daughter nodded, sticking her needle way back into the ends of her backpack. “Yes, Daddy.” She said.
“Alright. Just to let you know--Mr. Slater wants me to work late tonight—I’ll be busy with some paperwork and finishing up the new design for the Cambias casino.”
“Okay.” Rachel said. Ryan smiled more at her.
“Have a nice day at school—TGIF!”
Rachel giggled. “Whatever you say, Daddy!”
The doorbell rang again. Rachel gasped, and rushed away. “Gotta go! I’ll see you later tonight, bye!” She rushed outside, and met with Kuki Sanban.
Kuki smiled brightly, and nodded to her friend. “H-hi, Rachel.” She said shyly. Rachel smiled. Kuki’s personality was brand new—but it didn’t stop her from being so nice! When she aged, and was decommissioned, she had grown very shy but was very sweet to others. When Rachel arrived at the high school with Nigel, the two became fast friends. Kuki enjoyed Rachel’s company, as so did Rachel with Kuki.
“Hello, Kuki. How are you this morning?” Rachel asked kindly, starting up a conversation with her.
The two began walking down the sidewalk, carrying their backpacks over their shoulders or at least one.
“I’m wonderful!” Kuki chirped happily, and then blushed. She giggled to herself, with her hand on her mouth. Rachel raised an eyebrow.
“Alright, giggly-girl, spill it!” The blonde grinned.
The Asian teenaged girl’s cheeks grew redder than before, and then sighed. “Okay, so you caught me this time…” Kuki sighed, and finally let out all the details.
“I had a dream of…of…W-W-Wally last night.” She blurted out.
“No wa… get outta here!” Rachel laughed, nudging her friend’s shoulder playfully. “What was it about, Kuki?”
Kuki twirled a piece of her hair, avoiding eye-contact with Rachel. “Well… Wally protected me from a crook.”
“Ooooh.” Rachel’s eyes gleamed in the sunlight. “Continue!”
The two crossed the street, only a couple blocks away from their high school.
“He was dressed in a police uniform… he-he was…handsome.” Kuki’s cheeks turned bright pink when she mentioned the word. “He kicked the meanie crook to the curb and said… “Listen punk, ya ever come near MY Kuki again, and you’re gonna get two cruddy bullets in both of those cheeks of yours!”
Rachel laughed, and Kuki began to, too.
“The cheeks—you mean—”
“Yes!” Kuki exclaimed, laughing out loud. The two continued giggling together, and sighed.
“Our boys…” Rachel smiled dreamily. Kuki smiled at her.
“So… h-have you had any dreams of you-know-who lately?” she asked. Kuki also knew that Rachel was truly in love with Nigel Uno.
Rachel’s cheeks flamed. “I…well, I…”
“Yesss?” Kuki’s eyelashes bashed dreamily, wanting to know more.
“P-perhaps I did.” Rachel said, her eyes glancing everywhere.
“What was it about then?” asked Kuki, gaining curiosity.
Rachel smiled, closing her eyes. “Nigel…he… he healed me.”
Kuki’s eyes got so mushy and violet. She felt like she was going to explode over the cuteness and melt into a puddle of goo for Rachel’s happiness in her dream.
“H—he healed your heart?! OH! Th—that’s so sweet, Rachel!”
Suddenly the Asian wrapped her arms around the blonde girl, embracing her into a happy huggle. “I’m so happy for you! I hope your dream comes true for the both of you soon! So very soon, Rachel!”
Rachel hugged her back, a frown drawing to her face. “Yeah… if only it were real.” She said. Then she sighed, and heard the bell ring. People walked on into the school, where others parked their cars and turned them off.
“I bet you and Nigel will have your happily ever after one day! B-but right now… We better hurry for our classes!” Kuki pulled away, and took Rachel’s hand, running off with her.
The two raced off into the halls and to their lockers. Rachel was busy taking out her Natural Chemistry book—and she sighed.
Natural Chemistry was a total disappointment during at times. When she signed up for it when her 2nd year of high school started, she was so excited! But when she found out that Mr. Sutton was a real jerk and was lazy, not even close helping with the assignments or lab-tests with his students, Rachel was really upset.
At times she would walk up to his desk and ask a question on how to understand what she was assigned to do; he would look at her if he hadn’t ever seen her in his life.
“Maybe… he—he knows of it?” Rachel asked herself, passing students in the hallways. Her heart stopped beating like if it were frozen solid. “Oh my gosh…No…he…” Rachel shook her head, gaining back her confidence. “No… he doesn’t know it. No one knows it but me. Daddy swore he wouldn’t tell any of the teachers—or my friends for that matter.”
When Rachel was busily talking to herself, she suddenly heard out a familiar voice calling out her name.
“Ey’! Rachel! Ya there, mate?!”
“Huh?!” Rachel shook her head out of reality, and knocked into Wallabee Beetles—Kuki’s one and only crush! He was wearing a long orange and white stripped hoodie and blue jeans with white sneakers.
“Oh! Hello, Wally.” Rachel said.
“’Ey’a, mate.” Wally said with a grin. “Uh… y-ya’ gonna help me with the English paper again today at fifth period, r-right?” Wally chuckled sheepishly, rubbing the back of his head.
Rachel grinned. “Of course I will. What’re friends for?”
“Hey, thanks!” Wally beamed. “Besides, Mr. Kirksey would ‘ave my head if Ah’ don’t turn in the ‘Ta Kill a Mockin’ Bird study sheet. Thanks again, Rachel! Now Ah’ gotta go bug Abagail Lincoln if she’ll help me with my Plane Geo.”
The tall Aussie walked off with a whistle, not with a care in the world. The only thing on his mind today was the beautiful and cheerful but shy Kuki Sanban. Man did he want to tell her how much he felt about her!
Rachel only laughed. “Sure thing, Wally. I’ll see you in fifth period!”
“Will do, Rach!” Wally waved it off, walking down the hall.
Rachel smiled, walking off to her first class. She knew that Kuki’s going to be the happiest girl on the face of the Earth once she told Wally how she felt about him.
He was stupid, a tough guy… but sweet. Adorable. Freakin’ hilarious--with the exception of Hoagie Gilligan Jr. that is. (King of Comedians right there)

The hours had passed, and finally it was time for fifth hour—finally.
Wally was sitting at his desk in Mr. Kirksey’s room, singing a tune to himself. His paper and pencil was lying on his desk, and he rubbed his stomach which was filled with his fourth hour lunch.
“Sittin’ in a desk, actin’ all cool! Waitin’ for a friend, ta’ finish my homework! Da’nanana!”
He looked to Rachel’s desk, seeing that it was empty. Wally simply shrugged his shoulders, and sang the song over again but with a different verse.
The bell rang, meaning it was time for everyone to settle down and take their seats. Wally looked back at the desk again. Still empty. He started to grow anxious.
Where is she? She said she’d be here!
“Take your seats, please. No talking.” Mr. Kirksey said, sipping from his water canteen.
Wally thought that this dude, right there standing at his podium—has got to be one of the COOLEST adults in the entire universe. Mr. Kirksey kicked freaking hardcore butt! He was totally awesome. He had a light-brown goatee with messy hair. He worked out a lot down in the weight room around 6:30 in the morning before kids came in to study for tests or quizzes. And he had a love for literature, and wrote his own poetry over the name of “William Martin”… or something along the lines of that.
He also had a tattoo on his left arm, which was never seen since he wore his sleeves to cover the entire arm as he bundled up.
Wally could even worship this dude if he wanted to. He was that awesome.
“Alright… let’s see what’s on the agenda for today. Questions over the Study Guide part 4 of ‘To Kill A Mocking Bird’.”
Students groaned, banging their heads on desks and exc. Mr. Kirksey sighed, rolling his eyes.
“Uh… Mr. Kirksey?” Wally pipped up, raising his hand. The teacher nodded.
“Yes, Wallabee?”
“I-is Rachel McKenzie absent?” Wally asked with a stammer. He felt nervous… he really needed to finish his paper or he would be dead meat if he hasn’t!
The man swallowed his water, and then face-palmed. “Damn, forgot to check in absences.” He cussed to himself silently under his breath. Students stiffened their giggles, hearing him swear.
“She’s here,” someone called out. “Rachel’s here!”
Mr. Kirksey counted down the list on who was here and who was not, and looked up to the student who shouted out. His eyes came across Abby Lincoln and Hoagie Gilligan who were smiling side by side, sitting in their desks.
“Is that true, Hoagie?”
“Yep! Wouldn’t lie to you, Cap’n Kirk!” Hoagie nodded, saluting him. Abby giggled, laying her head on his shoulder. Hoagie grinned, tightening his hand over hers. These two were totally in love, no doubt about it!
“Ah… well, then. Where is she at?” Mr. Kirksey asked. “She’s never been late before.”
“Probably snogging with that British guy in a janitor’s closet somewhere!” Somebody cried out.
“EDWARD CULLEN ACTUALLY EXISTS!?!?” screamed a girl with her lungs nearly exploding by her loudness of voice.
“NO! A THOUSAND TIMES NO! Nigel Uno, dudette!”
“Ooooohhhh! … Awwwwww!” The girls were ashamed that it wasn’t RobPattz or a real-life Edward Cullen. Too bad for them.
Mr. Kirksey slammed his fist down onto the solid-top podium. “ENOUGH!” he cried. Students stopped whining, turning their full attention to their teacher. Wally was quite shocked, too.
“I cannot believe I’m saying this… but will one individual who is clueless about this novel or doesn’t have their sheet done please contact Rachel to come to class?” Mr. Kirksey asked calmly.
Wally raised a hand, growing nervous all over. Mr. Kirksey nodded.
“Mr. Beetles.” He said.
“Y-yeah…”
“Let me see your paper, please.” Mr. Kirksey held his gihugic hand out.
Wally gulped, and took his paper off his desk and handed it to his teacher. Mr. Kirksey looked over it, reading.
“… Mr. Beetles, just what exactly ARE the materials that Scout and Jem find in the knothole in front of Boo Radley’s house?”
Wally’s eye crossed for a moment in thought, being hidden by his bowl-cut blonde hair. “Uhh….let’me think for a mo’…. Err… A wad of gum, a ball of cruddy yarn, and two carved out Eskimos makin’ out in front’a a penguin.”
“…Wallabee, what exactly is your IQ?”
He shrugged. Mr. Kirksey’s face grimaced.
“I thought so. Anyway—the last of the materials are Scout and Jem are carved out of wood—no Eskimos nuzzling.”
“But they were makin’-out.” Wally protested.
“No… Eskimos nuzzle.”
“…Oh. Okay then…”
Mr. Kirkey sighed, and then pointed to the door. “Go on. What are you waiting for? Go on and get Rachel!”
Wally nodded. He coolly walked off, closing the classroom door behind him.
Mr. Kirksey's eyes drooped with annoyance.
Good Lord, what an idiot. I don't know how Rachel puts up with him through studying. Well... TGIF. TGIF.
